This year, we welcomed Eddy to our team and today, we sit down with him to hear how he went from over 350 pounds to the fit, inspiring, SWERVE instructor we know today.
Q: Were you active as a kid / young adult?
I tried to be active as a kid - I even enrolled in a little league football team (lol I know), but quit right away because I hated to run and didn’t fit in with the other little boys. As I young adult, I started to explore different ways of being active, but nothing really stuck until I fell in love with Zumba in 2011.
Q: Was there a particular moment that made you realize you needed to lose weight or a catalyst that made you start the process?
I studied classical voice and musical theater in college and graduate school, respectively. During a masterclass my junior year of college the guest artist said, “You’re very talented, but you’ll never work unless you lose some weight.” That really put things into perspective for me.
Q: How did you get yourself to get started? How did you keep it up?
When I first started dieting (low carb) and doing cardio (Zumba) twice a day, the weight started to melt off. At 350+ pounds, or whenever you have a plethora of weight to shed, it’ll start to decrease quickly with even subtle lifestyle shifts–but I did quickly plateau. I faced both healthy and unhealthy moments in my weight loss journey as I tried to stay on track. I didn’t begin to make progress again until I gained the “do this for yourself and no one else” mindset. Some people roll their eyes at that, but it’s a real thing.
Q: What changes did you make to your lifestyle?
As I mentioned earlier, because of how large I was, cardio workouts and cutting carbs did the trick at first. I’ve tried everything else, too–counting calories, Whole 30, intermittent fasting, keto… Every method has its pros and cons, and they’ve all contributed to my success in a positive way. I’m currently functioning on a ketogenic diet paired with intermittent fasting.
Q: Does your weight loss journey relate to you becoming a SWERVE instructor?
My weight loss was 100% a reason why I became a SWERVE instructor. The fact that I get to share my journey with others, hopefully inspire them towards setting (and accomplishing) their own goals is such a gift! Being a SWERVE instructor also continuously keeps me accountable for leading a healthy lifestyle. It was the perfect next step in my journey.
Q: What goals do you have now?
My overall goals are to keep meeting new people within the fitness industry, learning and growing with their help, and to meet others who want to make a change in their lives, motivating them to keep pushing beyond their expectations. Artistically, I am working towards being a consistently working actor on Broadway.
Q: What would you say to someone who is just embarking on a weight loss journey?
Realize that like everything in life, you will have moments of self doubt or failure on your weight loss journey. As humans, we are innately flawed. Remember to use every moment on you journey as a learning opportunity. Be open to all types of change, listen to your body, and most importantly LOVE YOURSELF. The fact that you have decided to work on becoming healthier and stronger is a such a commendable feat, so live in it!
